The coronavirus pandemic has spread rapidly across California. Experts say the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies.
To better understand the spread of the virus, The Times is conducting an independent, continous survey of dozens of local health agencies across the state.
What is the trend over time?
The state’s first case was confirmed near the end of January. The total grew slowly at first, then much faster as tests became more widely available.
New patients have continued to be confirmed every day, despite a shortage in tests.
“There are thousands of people in our communities who are positive but who have not been tested,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of L.A.’s public health department.
